Warning Signs of Depression

Trouble Concentrating

Depression can co-exist with other mental and physical illnesses. According to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, depression in the elderly may show itself through lack of concentration, forgetfulness and trouble making decisions, which sometimes can be mistaken for dementia. These symptoms can appear in all age groups, though. In children or teens, these symptoms could appear as attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, adults with ADHD have an increased risk for depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions. The National Institute of Mental Health also notes that individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are especially prone to depression. Other anxiety disorders commonly linked to depression include, but are not limited to, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social phobias and generalized anxiety disorder.
