Warning Signs of Depression

Aches and Pains

Depression is not just an emotional burden; the condition can affect physical health as well. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, depression can cause stomach pain, cramps, nausea, gas, diarrhea and other digestive problems. Depressed individuals also may have unexplained headaches and back pain, among other types of pain and discomfort. Furthermore, depression may lead to shaking, a feeling of tightness in the chest or throat, and dizziness. Additionally, depression is common in those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). An estimated three quarters of people with IBS will have at least one episode of depression, according to the National Health Service of the United Kingdom.
