Fifty years ago, the US Surgeon General first warned of the dangerous effects of smoking. On the anniversary of that announcement, the current Surgeon General has released new data.

Some newborns have breathing problems after birth, and according to a recent study, antidepressants taken during pregnancy may have a small role in these breathing problems.

Women have been told it's important not to smoke while they're pregnant. Some women may not realize how much smoking in pregnancy might affect their children later on.

Many older adults deal with chronic health conditions as they age.  And according to a new study, these chronic conditions often seem to be preceded by a single infection in elderly patients. 

Bodies in top-notch shape internally tend to defend themselves against infection and a variety of disease. When those inner defenses are down, however, body and mind alike can suffer.

Some babies may be more likely than others to develop respiratory infections. This is especially true of babies prone to allergies. Secondhand smoke can make the situation worse.

Being sick while pregnant certainly isn't fun. Having the flu while pregnant is even worse. But being down with the flu during pregnancy might be linked to longer term concerns, too.

After surgery, the body needs to focus on healing. Smoking may interfere with this healing process. People who smoke after surgery could be putting their bodies at serious risk for complications.
