An estimated 1 in 5 pregnancies will be affected by gestational diabetes, which increases the mother’s risk for type 2 diabetes. Since her pregnancy, Hayek has become a spokesperson for women’s and children’s health through various charitable efforts, including her own Salma Hayek Foundation. She told reporters, “I was ignorant when I was pregnant ... not knowing what was good for my body and what was bad.” In an effort to end that kind of ignorance, Hayek has given support to UNICEF, which provides health care and educational resources to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and promote healthy pregnancies around the world.
