NBA Stars Who Give Back
Off the court, Yao Ming is known for his participation in charities. He hosted a telethon that raised over $300,000 to help stop the spread of SARS, which had killed 240 people in China at that point. After the 2008 earthquake in China, Yao created the Yao Ming Foundation and donated $2 million to help rebuild schools and assist relief efforts. On top of that, Yao gathered support from other NBA players, like Steve Nash, for the China Youth Development Foundation and the Chi Heng Foundation, which helps children in China who are affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty.
