External Signs of Internal Problems
Graves' disease is caused by a malfunction in the body's immune system which results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 30 percent of these patients have what is called Graves’ ophthalmopathy — when immune system reactions like inflammation affect the muscles around the eyes. This can cause the patient to have bulging, reddened eyes and/or swollen eyelids.
