Oxymorphone Overview
Oxymorphone is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe pain.
Oxymorphone belongs to a group of drugs called called opiate (narcotic) analgesics. These work by changing the way the body responds to pain.
Oxymorphone is available in a tablet form and is usually given every four to six hours. It will depend on how intense your pain is.
This medication comes as an extended release tablet and is taken typically 2 times a day.
Do not crush, chew, or break oxymorphone extended release tablets. Swallow the extended release tablets whole.
Oxymorphone tablets should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
This medication is also available in an injectable form to be given directly into a vein (IV), in the muscle (IM), and under your skin (subcutaneously) by a healthcare professional.
Common side effects include constipation, nausea, and vomiting.
Oxymorphone can also cause drowsiness and dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how oxymorphone affects you.
