The Skinny Nut

Fat in pistachio nuts isn’t completely absorbed by the body

(RxWiki News) There are many kinds of nuts, but there’s only one so-called "skinny nut” — pistachios. These nuts provide the most benefits with fewer calories.

Snacking is part of a healthful diet, but the kind of food you eat plays a huge part in whether or not you maintain your ideal weight. Pistachios are a good snack choice because compared to other nuts, they provide the least amount of calories. They have also been found to benefit heart health.

"Snack on pistachio nuts to keep weight in check."

In a recent study, lead researcher and nutrition expert, David J. Baer, Ph.D., from the United Sates Department of Agriculture (USDA), found that pistachios can help with weight management and also provide cardiovascular support.

Simply including 1.5 to 3 ounces of pistachios (50-100 kernels) into your diet can help you achieve a healthy diet, Baer says. Pistachios are jam packed with antioxidants, phytoesterols and unsaturated fats – all elements that keep the body and heart healthy.

More importantly, the study found that fat content in pistachio nuts is not completely absorbed by the body. The energy value was 5.9 percent less in one serving of pistachios – about one ounce – than what experts originally believed, amounting to only 160 calories, Baer comments.

The study included 16 healthy adults who were asked to include pistachios in their diet. Researchers calculated and controlled all aspects of the diet to accurately measure the energy value.

The research is published in the British Journal of Nutrition.
