(RxWiki News) A lower-priced authorized generic for Humalog has been announced.
Eli Lilly will soon offer insulin lispro, an authorized generic of Humalog. This is a repackaged and less expensive form of the company's brand product, Humalog.
This generic will be available in both a vial and injectable pen.
Ultimately, this means that Eli Lilly will have both Humalog insulin and the authorized generic version on the market. The generic will be approximately half the price of Humalog.
Humalog has been available since 1996. It is a rapid-acting insulin approved for adults and children with diabetes.
However, the price of insulin has increased significantly over the years. Most insulins are now hundreds of dollars for just one month’s worth. And many long-acting and other rapid-acting insulins that are on the market are still brand name only.
Insulin is one of many drugs for which price can be a hardship for patients. If diabetes is not well-managed, it can lead to many complications and be very dangerous.
This authorized generic can offer patients a more affordable alternative and improve insulin accessibility.
If you have any questions about diabetes management, speak with your health care provider. Your health care provider can help you decide what type of insulin is right for you. Your doctor or pharmacist may also be able to advise you on more affordable medication options.
