What You Need to Know About Lupus
Despite popular belief, there is no specific diet for lupus patients. However, they are encouraged to eat a well-balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and moderate amounts of poultry, fish and other lean meats. Lupus patients should avoid alfalfa tablets because they have been tied to flare-ups and some lupus symptoms like muscle pain, fatigue and kidney problems. This may be caused by the amino acid L-canavanine found in alfalfa, which can lead to increased inflammation. Speaking to a doctor before adding vitamins to your diet is best. Vitamins may interact poorly with some drugs used to treat lupus. And while lupus patients can usually drink low to moderate amounts of alcohol, alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of some medications. Ask your doctor for the specifics about each medication you take to treat lupus.
