Understanding Autoimmune Disorders

Type 1 Diabetes

Not to be confused with the more common type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells found in the pancreas. Without the proper levels of insulin, the body struggles to process glucose (blood sugar) into energy, leading to a buildup of glucose in the bloodstream. There is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes, and patients need insulin therapy to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Talk with your doctor if you notice an increased need to urinate, extreme hunger and thirst, sudden weight loss or chronic fatigue, as these may be signs of type 1 diabetes or another serious condition.
