Understanding Autoimmune Disorders

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the US, affecting almost 8 million Americans. The condition is characterized by the development of thick, scaly patches of skin that are often itchy or painful. Researchers believe the condition is caused by the immune system targeting healthy skin cells by mistake. This immune reaction causes an increased production of skin cells and white blood cells, which are quickly moved to the outer layer of skin. About 10 to 30 percent of psoriasis patients also develop psoriatic arthritis if the immune response damages joints. Treatment typically involves reducing inflammation and managing topical breakouts of psoriasis.
