Understanding Autoimmune Disorders

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition characterized by an immune reaction to ingested gluten. Gluten — a common protein found in wheat, barley and rye — triggers intestinal inflammation, which can lead to symptoms like weight loss, bloating and even diarrhea. Untreated celiac disease can damage the lining of one’s intestine enough to interfere with nutrient absorption and potentially can lead to malnutrition. The exact cause of the condition remains unknown. The Mayo Clinic estimates that 1 in 141 people in the U.S. have celiac disease. Not to be confused with IBD, the only treatment for celiac disease is to completely eliminate gluten from one’s diet.
