Nearly 4.1 million women in US gave birth this past year, bringing the total number of mothers to more than 85 million. Starting in 1914, every second Sunday of May has been dedicated to the celebration of motherhood, yet the profile of a typical mother has changed dramatically since the holiday’s inception. Mothers in the 21st century are, on average, more career-oriented, more independent and more educated than previously. Women today also have more tools at their disposal, both to prevent unwanted pregnancies and to promote healthy pregnancies. Because of the crucial role that mothers play in their own family and society at large, researchers have been keeping a close eye on the changing trends.
