Power Outage: What You Need to Know

What to Do Before a Power Outage

You may think you have everything you need in case of a power outage, but what if the power’s out for longer than you expect? Or if something unexpected happens? The American Red Cross recommends keeping a flashlight on hand and avoiding candles, which can pose a fire risk. An extra supply of batteries, cash and documentation, including a medication list and emergency contact information are recommended. A gallon of water for each person in your household per day, and a supply of non-perishable, quick-to-make food are also recommended, along with ice and coolers to keep food at a safe temperature. A first-aid kit, a 7-day supply of medication and personal hygiene items are also suggested.
