New Medicines of 2015
Entresto is a prescription drug used to treat heart failure. It is a single product containing two medications: sacubitril and valsartan. Sacubitril belongs to a group of drugs called neprilysin inhibitors, which work to control blood volume and lower blood pressure. Valsartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, which help relax the blood vessels. This medication comes in tablet form and is taken typically twice a day. Common side effects include low blood pressure, high blood potassium levels and poor kidney function. Entresto is the first heart failure treatment to contain a neprilysin inhibitor, which helps control blood volume and makes valsartan work better.
