Gilenya is thought to act by stopping certain white blood cells (lymphocytes) from crossing the blood-brain barrier into the central nervous system, reducing inflammatory damage to nerve cells. Gilenya is a capsule taken by mouth once daily with side effects that may include headache, influenza, diarrhea, back pain, abnormal liver tests and cough.
