Health Risks Seniors Should Be Aware Of

Falls

Unintentional falls are the leading cause of injury, trauma and death from injury among elderly adults. Around one in three people over the age of 65 report falling at least once a year, but fewer than half talk to their doctor about it. While there are many factors involved in an accidental fall, certain medications and conditions — such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis — can significantly increase the risk of falling. In serious falls, leg, spine and hip fractures or traumatic brain injury can occur. In the case of hip fractures, patients almost always require surgical repair or replacement followed by months of physical therapy. Tell your doctor if you feel that you may be at an increased risk of falling.
