Health Risks Seniors Should Be Aware Of

Arthritis

Arthritis is a broad term that describes a variety of conditions affecting one’s muscles, bones and joints. Osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the cartilage and joints) and rheumatoid arthritis (inflammatory condition affecting five or more joints) are the most common types of arthritis. According to the CDC, over 50 million Americans are affected by arthritis, which can contribute to immobility, inactivity, social isolation and depression. Medications can help to reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis, but specific treatment options vary by the type of arthritis. Physical therapy also can help improve the range of motion and strength of joint muscles. Talk to your doctor if you have been experiencing joint pain that interferes with daily life.
