Essential Nutrients for Children
As kids grow up, girls and boys start to need different levels of each food group. For girls ages 4 to 8, calories are recommended to clock in at between 1,200 and 1,800 daily. For boys, adding 200 calories is recommended. Girls are recommended to eat between 3 and 5 ounces and boys are recommended to eat between 3 and 5.5 ounces daily. For vegetables, grains and dairy, the recommended amounts are the same for both girls and boys — 1.5 to 2.5 cups, 4 to 6 ounces and 2.5 to 3 cups, respectively.
