Heavy drinking can alter the process of fibrinolysis, which regulates the breakdown of blood clots. When fibrinolysis is impaired, blood clots can grow to a dangerous size and reduce blood flow to vital organs. When blood flow to the brain is reduced, a person can have a stroke.
