Cystic Fibrosis 101
CF is an inherited disease that affects secretory glands which create mucus and sweat in the body. CF thickens the usually thin, water-based mucus that coats the body’s organs. The thick, sticky mucus then builds up and blocks the airways in the lungs. This buildup can also block the tubes within the pancreas and prevent digestive enzymes from reaching the small intestines. The mucus also provides germs and bacteria a home in the body, which causes the risk of lung infections and organ damage to increase over time.
