Coping with Overactive Bladder

Botox

If you thought Botox was just used to look younger, think again! OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) is a protein from the bacteria that causes botulism. Botox works by blocking nerve activity in the muscles, which causes a temporary reduction in muscle activity. When small doses are injected into the bladder tissues, they paralyze the muscles. This treatment can help control severe urge incontinence, but these effects typically only last between 6 and 9 months before another injection is needed. This treatment is also not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Talk to your doctor about whether or not Botox is right for you.
