In 2009, Melissa Etheridge, American rock singer and songwriter, was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Over the next year, Etheridge underwent a bilateral modified radical mastectomy, chemotherapy and reconstruction surgery. She now serves as a spokesperson for breast cancer.
