Breathing Troubles: Common Causes and Triggers

Respiratory Infection

Respiratory infections are a broad category of illnesses that range from the common cold to influenza and pneumonia. These infections can present many symptoms that may interfere with normal breathing. Such symptoms may include a lasting cough, congestion and inflammation. While these infections are generally short-lived, severe respiratory infections in infants have been linked to an increased risk for asthma. Additionally, lung infections in people with pre-existing respiratory issues may lead to even more serious complications. Almost half of COPD flare-ups are attributed to lung infections, which can lead to hospitalization and even death. Due to the increased risk of complications, doctors generally recommend that vulnerable patients, including those with COPD or pulmonary hypertension, receive an annual flu vaccine.
