Breathing Troubles: Common Causes and Triggers

COPD

COPD is an umbrella term describing several severe lung diseases, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. While these conditions may affect the lungs differently, they all result in respiratory issues stemming from lung damage. Also, secondary conditions like pulmonary hypertension are common in COPD patients and can further damage your ability to breathe. The main risk factor for COPD is smoking tobacco. Even though there is currently no method to repair the resulting lung damage, quitting smoking is essential to prevent further damage. Treatments with medications are meant control symptoms and increase airflow. Considering that complications of COPD are the third leading cause of death in America, it is important to stop smoking as soon as possible and avoid secondhand exposure.
