Breathing Troubles: Common Causes and Triggers

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition involving inflammation of the lungs. About 20 million Americans live with asthma, which can lead to shortness of breath and wheezing. Allergic asthma is the most common form of the disease and is generally triggered by an inhaled irritant such as pollen, dust or smoke. Stress and anxiety also have been known to trigger asthma attacks in some individuals. Despite being a relatively common condition, asthma requires ongoing treatment, as a severe, uncontrolled asthma attack can be deadly. Like COPD, asthma is commonly treated with a combination of measures, including steroid medications to reduce inflammation and lifestyle changes to avoid triggers.
