17: Wyoming

With a population of nearly 600,000, Wyoming came in at number 17 on the list of most unhappy states in the US. Close to 22 percent of the adult population in Wyoming smokes cigarettes. According to one piece of research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, there appears to be a cause-and-effect relationship between smoking cigarettes and depression; basically, smoking may increase the risk of depressive symptoms.
