My medication is due to be refilled while I'm out of town. What should I do?

Having your medication due for a refill while you are on vacation or out of town can be a headache, but it is quite common.

The good thing is that you are staying on top of your medications and know when you need to refill them.

Luckily, there are two options that will ensure you continue taking your medications and not skip any doses.

The best solution would be to get an early refill on your medication. Most insurances will not allow you refill your medications early. However, if you call your insurance company, and let them know that you will be on vacation, they may allow for an early refill to make sure you do not miss any doses. This can be coordinated with your regular pharmacy so you can be able to pick up your medication before you leave on vacation.

If your insurance company does not allow for an early refill even though you will be out of town, another option would be to find a pharmacy that is nearby to your vacation spot.

You can speak to the pharmacist and notify them that you are due for a refill but are from out of town. They can actually call your regular pharmacy and transfer the prescription to them. This transfer will allow the pharmacy to fill the prescription for you even though you do not live in the area.

State laws may prohibit or limit the number of times a prescription may be transferred if you are filling a controlled medication. Common controlled medications include pain and anxiety medications.

The most important thing is to not skip any doses of your medications. This may cause more harm to you. Be sure to coordinate your refills with your insurance and your pharmacy.
