Getting enough calcium and vitamin D is essential to building and keeping strong bones. Calcium is a also mineral that plays an important role in muscle contraction, nerve transmission and the release of hormones. Each day, we lose calcium through our skin, nails, hair and sweat, but since our bodies cannot produce new calcium, it’s important to get calcium from the foods we eat. If we don’t get enough, our bodies take calcium from our bones.
