Former NBA player and coach Maurice Cheeks was a physically fit 46-year-old when he was diagnosed with gout. After his diagnosis, Cheeks became outspoken about gout awareness. Knowing the risk factors for gout is critical. Risk factors include eating too much purine-rich foods, such as red meat and shellfish. Sugary drinks and alcohol also play a role in increasing the risk for a gout attack. Talk to your doctor about establishing a diet that helps to lower uric acid levels.
