6 Unexpected Uses for Botox

Potential Side Effects

Botox injections are relatively safe when performed by an experienced doctor, but can be dangerous if administered incorrectly. The most common side effects of Botox include swelling or bruising at the injection site, headache and flu-like symptoms. However, if injections aren’t placed correctly, the toxin may spread to nearby tissues and cause problems. Although very rare, Botox can also spread to other parts of the body and cause muscle weakness, vision problems, trouble breathing, loss of bladder control, and trouble speaking or swallowing. Doctors generally advise against Botox in pregnant and breastfeeding women, as the potential effects on babies are still unknown. If you take a blood thinner, you may need to stop this medication several days before injection to avoid bleeding or bruising. Notify your doctor if you take muscle relaxers, sleep aids or allergy medications. And as always ask your doctor if Botox is right for you before beginning treatment.
