Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that is caused by damage to the myelin sheath, the protective layer that surrounds the nerve cells. When these nerve cell coverings are damaged, the signals slow down or stop, which can cause MS symptoms. Talk to your doctor if you think you may have MS.
