Roger Kurlan, MD

Roger M. Kurlan, MD, is a neurologist at the Neuroscience Institute at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, N.J., directing the Movement Disorders Program.

Dr. Kurlan is recognized internationally for his clinical and research expertise in neurological movement disorder. He developed the first-of- its-kind Wellness and Support Program for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.

He is a founding member of the Parkinson’s Study Group and current leader of the Tourette’s Syndrome Study Group collaborative international research groups that conduct large-scale investigations.

He has published more than 175 articles and has edited two books. Dr. Kurlan has had a record of steady federal support for his research. His investigations have focused on experimental therapies, but he has published extensively on epidemiology, phenomenology, genetics, cognitive and behavioral aspects and neurobiology. He has longstanding collaborations with basic neuroscientists and has conducted many large-scale, multicenter clinical and translational research studies.

Dr. Kurlan received his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1978. He did a residency in Internal Medicine at the Washington University Medical Center and then a residency in neurology and a Fellowship in movement disorders and clinical neuropharmacology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He remained as a faculty member at the University of Rochester from 1984 to 2009, serving as professor of neurology at the Center for Developmental and Aging Neurobiology.
