Purpose of Gaviscon

Gaviscon Extra Strength, Extra Strength Cherry, Regular Strength Liquid, and Extra Strength Liquid, are over-the-counter medications used to relieve:

  • heartburn
  • acid indigestion
  • sour stomach
  • upset stomach associated with these symptoms

They are also used to temporarily relieve symptoms of heartburn and acid indigestion due to acid reflux.

Gaviscon Extra Strength Tablets Cherry: aluminum hydroxide 160 mg and magnesium carbonate 105 mg

Gaviscon Regular Strength Liquid: aluminum hydroxide 95 mg and magnesium carbonate 358 mg

Gaviscon Extra Strength Liquid: aluminum hydroxide 254 mg and magnesium carbonate 237.5 mg

Gaviscon Regular Strength Liquid: benzyl alcohol, D&C yellow #10, edetate disodium, FD&C blue #1, flavor, glycerin, saccharin sodium, sodium alginate, sorbitol solution, water, xanthan gum

Gaviscon Extra Strength and Extra Strength Cherry tablets:

Do not use:

  • for peptic ulcers
  • if you have trouble swallowing
Ask a doctor before use if you have:
  • kidney disease
  • a sodium restricted diet

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking a prescription drug. Antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs.

Stop use and ask a doctor if:

  • heartburn or stomach pain continues
  • you need to take this product for more than 14 days

Keep out of reach of children.

In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away (1-800-222-1222).

Gaviscon Extra Strength tablets:

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are:

  • taking a prescription drug. Antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs.
  • if you are on a sodium-restricted diet
When using this product:
  • do not take more than 16 tablets in 24 hours
  • do not use the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks

Keep out of reach of children.

In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away (1-800-222-1222).

 
Gaviscon Regular Strength and Extra Strength Liquid:

Do not use if you have kidney disease.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are:

  • taking a prescription drug. Antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs.
  • if you are on a sodium-restricted diet
When using this product (Regular Strength liquid)
  • do not take more than 8 tablespoonfuls in 24 hours
  • do not use the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks
  • laxative effect may occur
When using this product (Extra Strength liquid):
  • do not take more than 16 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours
  • do not use the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks
  • laxative effect may occur
Keep out of reach of children.

In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away (1-800-222-1222).

 

Directions

Gaviscon Extra Strength and Extra Strength Cherry tablets:

  • Chew 2-4 tablets four times a day or as directed by a doctor.
  • Take after meals and at bedtime or as needed
  • For best results, drink a half glass of water or other liquid after each dose.
  • DO NOT SWALLOW WHOLE.

Gaviscon Regular Strength liquid:

  • Shake well.
  • Take 1-2 tablespoonfuls four times a day or as directed by a doctor.
  • Take after meals and at bedtime.
  • Dispense product only by spoon or other measuring device.

Gaviscon Extra Strength liquid:

  • Shake well.
  • Take 2-4 tablespoonfuls four times a day or as directed by a doctor.
    • Take after meals and at bedtime.
    • Dispense product only by spoon or other measuring device.

Gaviscon Extra Strength and Extra Strength Cherry tablets:

  • Each tablet contains magnesium 35mg and sodium 20mg.
  • Store at room temperature up to 25°C (77°F) in a dry place.

Gaviscon Regular Strength liquid:

  • Each tablespoon (15mL) contains magnesium 115mg and sodium 52mg.
  • Store at room temperature up to 25°C (77°F) and avoid freezing.
  • Keep tightly closed.

Gaviscon Extra Strength liquid:

  • Each teaspoon (5mL) contains magnesium 80mg and sodium 14mg.
  • Store at room temperature up to 25°C (77°F) and avoid freezing.
  • Keep tightly closed.
