Power Outage: What You Need to Know

During the Power Outage

As mentioned earlier, it’s best to avoid candles altogether to prevent starting a fire. It’s also recommended to keep your refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible in order to preserve your food for as long as possible. If the weather is warm when your power goes out and you plan to stay at home, stay on the lowest level of your house, put on light clothes and drink water regularly even if you don’t feel thirsty. If the weather is cold, bundle up in warm clothes. If you think you will be powerless for a long time, you may want to consider going to someone else’s home or a public place with power. Be aware of the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. Avoid turning on your grill, generator or anything other device that uses natural gas, propane, gasoline or charcoal in small areas like basements and garages.
