Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy
Mercury may already have a bad reputation, but it only gets worse for pregnant women. Mercury is an element naturally found in some bodies of water. Over time, mercury deposits can collect in the bodies of the fish that live there. Because fish that live longest contain the highest levels, the types to avoid include shark, tilefish, swordfish and king mackerel. White (albacore) tuna should be limited to 6 ounces per week. While high levels of mercury can be harmful to anyone, mercury consumed during pregnancy is linked to birth defects. Low-mercury fish is perfectly okay — and even recommended — for pregnant women due to the healthy fats, vitamins and protein it contains.
