Overview
Influenza is commonly referred to as the flu and it is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. The influenza virus causes the flu and it is spread easily.
People usually become infected with influenza after breathing in tiny droplets from coughs or sneezes from someone who has the virus. A person can also catch the flu by touching something with the influenza virus on it and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
It's easy to confuse the flu and a common cold because they share many symptoms, however, they are different. Many people will get a few colds in a year but with the flu, it's much less frequent.
